Teeing off to support women and children who face violence in their lives on the Sunshine Coast.

Clouds lifted and the sun shone on golfers, organizers and volunteers at the 1st Annual Play GOLF Give Golf Tournament held at the Sunshine Coast Golf & Country Club on Saturday, August 15th, 2009.

Highlights of the day included the chance to win a $25,000 hole-in-one cash prize sponsored by Cedar's Inn and Sailor Dan's Restaurant, a $5,000 hole-in-one sponsored by Gerry Harris Diesel, a pre-tournament stretch class for golfers taught by golf's fitness expert, Katherine Roberts and an amazing open-air BBQ dinner on the gorgeous clubhouse deck prepared by the amazing Jackie Coombs and her catering staff.

Sponsors from the business community are always the backbone to an event such as this. Presenting sponsor, Gibsons Building Supplies, associate sponsor, Blackfish Pub and the official airlines, Tofino Air made it possible for Play GOLF Give to even get off the ground. Media sponsor, Just Business People, played an integral part in helping to get the word out about the tournament, and generous hole sponsors, prize donors and golfers completed the picture.

The event was the result of a group of women volunteers, The Women's Giving Circle, looking for a ways to break the cycle of violence in our community. All proceeds of this event will stay in our community and be donated to the Sunshine Coast Community Services Society to support their Together Against Violence programs. Golf prizes that are useful to women and children at the two transition houses were collected from the business community, and the winning golfers generously donated their prizes back to the charity in what may be the first "play it forward" golf tournament!

In response to comments from golfers such as "It was a great tourney, and we enjoyed it a lot! Hope you do it again next year" and "Had a fantastic day!", the Coordinating Committee composed of Judy Fitzgerald, Sandy Friedman, Gloria Lifton, Debbie Mealia and Charlene SanJenko are hard at work planning next year's event.
